ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIP IN PRIMARY CARE BROCHURE
Established more than 30 years ago, MU's two-year family medicine fellowship program was designed to prepare physicians for careers in academic medicine. Since then, we have trained nearly 80 physicians and researchers who continue MU's tradition of innovation as they build the specialty of family medicine across the country.
In 1979, MU became one of five institutions awarded funding from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to support the first Family Medicine Academic Fellowship Program. The original fellowship was a two-year program, and training included classroom and independent study, clinic time, and field experiences. We graduated our first class of fellows in 1982. Current MU Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Family Medicine Professor Hal Williamson, MD, MSPH, was a member of this class.
Today, we offer an academic fellowship in primary care. This two-year program provides fellowship training in two tracks:
EDUCATION
Academic Fellows in Primary Care develop an individual educational plan with fellowship faculty in the context of meeting professional and educational goals.
Research Fellows are required to complete an independent research project. In addition, Fellows develop active collaborative research projects, participate in scholarly activities with senior research faculty, and complete a research grant proposal.
Master Educator Fellows assume major responsibilities in teaching or curriculum development during their second year, as negotiated with a senior faculty advisor.
All Fellows are expected to complete requirements for a Master of Science degree. This degree requires completion of an original research or scholarly project and 30 hours of graduate coursework. The core curriculum includes:
- Biostatistics
- Clinical Research Methods I and II
- Epidemiology
- Evidence-Based Medicine I and II
The additional hours of credit needed for the degree are earned as experiences tailored to the Fellow’s professional goals in these areas: clinical, teaching, leadership, and scholarly work. Fellows may also take other MU graduate courses on campus, with approval of their advisor.
FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
for tailoring the individual experience include:
- Collaborative research projects with fellowship faculty members
- Teaching responsibilities at the predoctoral and residency levels
- Participation in administrative or leadership experiences
CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
Primary Care Fellows, Required Activities:
- Three half-day clinics weekly: Patient care and/or precepting residents
- Short-term hospital attending responsibilities
Primary Care Fellows, Optional Activities:
- May spend more time attending on inpatient or obstetrics services or in clinical areas of special interest to the Fellow
