Residency Highlights

Nationally Recognized Department
For 15 years, a U.S. News and World Report survey of medical faculty has rated us among the top three family medicine programs.

P4 Project
P4 is a six-year project to inspire and examine substantial innovation focused on changing the way family physicians are trained to practice medicine. Only 14 Family Medicine residency programs in the nation were chosen to participate.

Best of Both Worlds
Family medicine residency at MU is an academic program that blends the best of University and community-based training. Residents learn from outstanding teachers and by accessing the latest resources and technology at the University, and they gain autonomy by providing patient care under the guidance of faculty in our community practices.

The Partnership
The partnership is a unique aspect of our residency. Residents work with the same partner for three years. Partners learn from each other and provide each other emotional and professional support. The partnership is an excellent model for future practice. In addition, it allows residents increased clinic time and more flexible call schedules.

Personalized Training
We offer the ability to individualize your residency experience to target specific interests and skills. Residents have personalized their training in the fields of Geriatrics, Obstetrics, Rural Medicine, Research/Academics, Sports Medicine, and more.

Strong Faculty Support
Residents grow personally and professionally as faculty provide them ongoing feedback during rotations and meet with them for regular advising sessions. Close faculty-resident relationships develop and contribute to the congeniality that characterizes MU family medicine.

A Leader in EMR Development and Use
MU Family and Community Medicine has been a pioneer in developing and implementing the electronic medical record (EMR) at University Hospital and its outlying clinics since 1999. In fact, our department is uniquely positioned as a strategic partner with the Cerner Corporation, the industry's leading EMR vendor. For five years, we've been collaborating with Cerner to lead health care into the future as we develop state-of-the-art tools and technologies that promote concepts key to the Patient-Centered Medical Home. Our residency program is committed to teaching the physicians of tomorrow how to effectively use these new tools and technologies.

Innovative Group Learning
This weekly session starts with a resident meeting, followed by department-sponsored teaching sessions that cover a diverse mix of topics relating to primary care. Residents benefit from the interactive, hands-on training they receive at these sessions. Our nationally recognized Theme Day program provides one afternoon of didactic series each month devoted to a specific topic, with various methods of teaching and skills training.

An Enhanced Residency
Our residency is supported - not opposed - by residents from other University departments. Professional, collegial relations are fostered as residents from different specialties learn from each other. Other departments consult us to manage their complicated patients.

Resident-Focused Program
Our program is resident-focused and dynamic. While maintaining our vision and principles, we seek continuous improvement based on resident feedback. In addition, residents play a major role in program development and serve alongside faculty on department committees.
